At Yale-New Haven Hospital, our continued growth both in terms of size and stature has been paralleled by the expansion of our commitment to serving poor and disadvantaged patients. We take great pride in offering extensive charity and free care, as well as one of the most generous financial assistance policies in the nation. We also sponsor and participate in a wide range of programs and activities that benefit the people of southern Connecticut, and play an active role as a good neighbor in the city of New Haven. In short, we choose to look at social responsibility not as a corporate function but as the personal responsibility of every member of our team to make a positive impact in the community we call home.
World-Class Care for Our Neighbors
Yale-New Haven Hospital is a world-class medical center in a city where many citizens find it difficult to pay for routine health care. To address this challenge, we've developed a number of high-profile programs, including The Primary Care Center and The Women's Care Center at Yale-New Haven, both of which are dedicated to meeting the needs of the uninsured or underinsured. We also created a Wellness Information Network that links uninsured patients who come to the Emergency Department with potential primary care providers, as well as a growing team of interpreters speaking more than 85 different languagesto enable us to communicate with a diverse patient population. In addition, each year we lead community-wide initiatives to address a variety of issues, including the challenges of substance abuse, the treatment of asthma and the management of diabetes.
Special Care for Families
We take great pride in our leadership role in women's and children's health issues, and have developed a wide range of community outreach programs to support these endeavors:

The Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which provides routine mammograms, clinical breast exams and Pap smears free of charge to eligible women over 40.

S.A.L.O.N. (Strategic Alliance for Learning, Outreach and Networking), a program partnership with regional beauty salons to provide breast health education and screening outreach services to African-American and Hispanic women over 50.

The Yale-New Haven Mobile Mammography Van, which has performed more than 10,000 screenings at sites across the region since 2002.

The largest Women, Infants and Children nutrition program in New Haven is administered through the Pediatric Primary Care Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
We offer a wide range of parenting programs and parental support services, including emotional support, educational play programs and Motheread¨, which uses children's literature to help mothers understand the cognitive, developmental and emotional value of reading to children.
An Active Member of the Community
From housing for low-income families in New Haven's Hill neighborhood to an Employee Home Ownership Assistance Program designed to help employees purchase homes in the city, Yale-New Haven Hospital's involvement in the community has always extended beyond our mailing address. As a hospital and as individuals, we are deeply committed to working with community organizations, public agencies, the clergy, elected officials and community leaders to improve the quality of life for our neighbors. As one of the state's largest employers, we're also engaged in active partnerships with area schools to build a foundation for future job growth. Working with the public school system, local colleges and universities, our pioneering School-To-Career program has put hundreds of students on the path to a brighter future. One such example is the associate degree in nursing program we helped to launch at nearby Gateway Community College.

Yale-New Haven Hospital spends more than $9 million annually in public health programs.

We are also invested in many community programs, including the Mayor's Youth Initiative, a Summer Jobs Program for city teenagers, Mentor New Haven, the Boys and Girls Clubs of New Haven, and expanded public day care for the city of New Haven.

We are active participants in the City of New Haven Homeless Advisory Commission, which is in the midst of a 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness in the city.

We created the Yale-New Haven Hospital Latino Advisory Council to enhance relationships between the hospital and the Latino community.

We worked with local business, community, religious, health care and social service leaders to form the Yale-New Haven Hospital Community Council, which serves as a thrice-yearly forum on important city issues.
